Hemingway 5K Sunset Run and Paddleboard Race

General Race Info:   Papa’s Pilar® Rum has come onboard as the new title sponsor of the Hemingway 5K Sunset Run and Paddleboard Race set for Saturday night, July 23rd. “We are so excited to have this perfect fit with Papa’s Pilar Rum as our main sponsor for this long-standing Hemingway Days Key West event!”, says Barbara Wright, race director. Papa’s Pilar® is the premium sipping rum inspired by Ernest Hemingway, a man who crafted captivating stories, tackled epic feats and is quite possibly the world’s greatest adventurer. “Papa” as Ernest Hemingway was known, lived an epic life full of perpetual motion, and this rum was crafted to accompany enthusiasts as they sink their teeth into life. Named for his muse and one true constant, Pilar is the vessel that allowed America’s literary giant to reach beyond the shoreline, feast on life and remind us to never be a spectator. The popular 5K Run (and Walk) is the oldest ongoing race in Key West, and for the fourth year also combines a Paddleboard Race, which has grown tremendously. Entrants are encouraged to sign up early and can reserve paddleboards through companies listed online atkeywestspecialevents.com. At 6 p.m., the paddleboard race starts at the island’s Southernmost Beach, 1405 Duval St. The course is three miles on the Atlantic Ocean then finishes back at the beach. Then the 5K Run will begin at 7:30 at the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, which overlooks the ocean at Whitehead and South streets. The fast, flat 3.1-mile course takes runners through picturesque Old Town Key West past landmarks including the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. In true Key West style, there’s an after-party back at the beach by the Southernmost Beach Cafe, with awards, food, libations, raffles, and a silent auction. On race day, the registration booth will be open from 3-7 p.m. at the Southernmost Hotel parking lot, corner of Duval and South streets. Race packets can be picked up there. The race will be chip timed. Visitkeywestspecialevents.com to download registration forms and mail, or they can be picked up at local hotels and fitness centers. Sponsored in part by Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Papa’s Pilar Rum, Southernmost Beach Resort, The Westin Key West Resort and Marina, Key West Aloe, Elite Caribbean Resorts, and Islamorada Beer Company.
